TNS – battery packs for starting locomotive engines

The TNS batteries, developed specifically for us by Elhim-Iskra JSC, are designed to provide engine starting power for traction locomotives.

The special positive and negative plates in TNS-type batteries are alternated and placed inside a non‑removable steel casing. At the top, the positive plates are connected together, and the negative plates are connected in the same way, using a welded auxiliary bridge with an external current terminal. The interior of the battery casing is filled with electrolyte, which is diluted sulfuric acid with a density of 1.25 g/cm³. After filling, the current terminal ensures the operation of the battery.

This construction allows the battery to withstand discharges down to 1.75 V per cell during active operation.

Additional Information

The 64V THC and 96V THC batteries are lead-acid batteries consisting of individual 4V sections. Each section contains 2 cells, and if one cell fails, it is not necessary to replace the entire section—only the defective cell.
The sequential connection of the sections is carried out using corrosion‑protected copper connectors.
The large amount of electrolyte reduces the need for frequent refilling with distilled water.
They are equipped with safety valves that allow free gas release but prevent electrolyte splashing and the entry of contaminants into the cells. Protection rating: IP65.

Purpose

Main purpose: starting internal combustion engines of diesel locomotives, as well as supplying power to control circuits, lighting, and other electrical equipment.
For main diesel locomotives of the series TEP70BS, 2TE70, TEP70U, 2TE25A, 2M62, M62, 2TE10M, 2TE10V, 2TE10U, 2TE10, 2TE116 and others.
For shunting diesel locomotives of the series TEM2, TEM18DM, TEM TMH, TEM18V, TEM14, TEM7A, TEM9, TGM4, TGM6, TGM4B, TGM6D, TGM40, TGM23 and others.
